Nevada Activist Agrees to Negotiate With Rated Gambling Sites on Tax Increase Tony Dane, an activist from Southern Nevada who seeks to raise the state’s tax on gambling sites, has agreed to negotiate with the casinos in order to read a compromise. Dane has yielded to a request by an unnamed operator of leading Nevada gambling sites to postpone filing his petition to raise taxes almost threefold until after a series of meetings. The purpose of the meetings will be to negotiate a raise in the tax level only to a point which will be bearable for the industry. Dane, who has collected over $100,000 to lobby to increase taxes on gambling sites in Nevada, had previously proposed raising the tax from 6.75% to 18.25%. This increase, according to Dane’s estimates, would raise nearly $800 million in revenue. This new revenue would be used, according to Dane’s plan, to subsidize homeowners. When Dane first announced his proposal, the operators of gambling sites across the states protested loudly. The new tax, they argued, would crush the potential for investment in new gambling sites, which, at the current tax rate, is going on all over the state. They also argued that it was unfair for the gambling sites to be forced to finance homeowners, particularly those who are wealthy.
