Coventry Asks Public to Campaign for Super CasinoThe citizens of Coventry have been asked to support the campaign to bring Britain's first American- style casino to their city's Ricoh Arena.Under Britain's Gambling Law, which liberalized regulation of the gaming industry, the government will grant one license to a UK city to host the nation's first "super casino." City councils across Britain have until March 31st to submit casino proposals to the government's advisory panel. The council will make a final decision about where to grant a super casino license sometime in 2007. Coventry officials have asked residents to show support for the project by either text- messaging officials, or by logging onto the government advisory panel website to vote "yay" on the Coventry super casino support page. Pro- super casino figures in Coventry decided to ask people to back the super casino project after a poll indicated that residents were less than fully aware of the proposal. Only one in every six of the city's residents were aware of the campaign to lobby government officials. Also, although three- quarters of Coventry residents were vaguely aware of plans to build some sort of casino fewer than 50 percent of residents knew that the casino was proposed for the Ricoh Arena. Tory Coventry City Council leader Ken Taylor said: "The government's decision in 2007 may seem like a long way off, but we urge the people of Coventry to get behind the campaign now to ensure that Coventry can capitalize on this important opportunity." Government officials estimate that the casino would bring around 1,000 jobs to the Coventry area, and would be a key part of plans to revitalize the Ricoh Arena. Council Leader Taylor said that a super casino in Coventry would provide a boost to the entire area, and added that: "This is an historic opportunity that Coventry should pursue energetically as the benefits will be significant." In order to advance their goal, casino advocates in Coventry have formed a group called "Coventry Now." The group's members include members of parliament, the city council, and a variety of community groups, and now- if the group succeeds in its plans to harness the power of popular support- the general public. The Isle of Capri casino chain, based in Biloxi, Mississippi, is already making plans for a casino in the Ricoh Arena. If Coventry is chosen the super casino pilot site, the chain will simply expand on the current site. Council Labour opposition leader John Mutton said that the gambling council should choose Coventry as the super casino site since the casino would not have to be built from scratch: "If the government is looking for one super casino as a pilot, then logically it should decide on one that's built and just needs fitting out now - and that's in Coventry."
